In the bottom of the ninth, Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees. With runners at first and second and two out, Offerman singled but Spencer threw Damon out at home as tried to score from second and the game was over.
The Yankees overcame three errors to get the win.

In the top of the first, the Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out. Martinez went down on strikes for the first out. Knoblauch beat out an infield single to bring home the game's first run. Curtis swung and missed on a full count pitch for the second out. Brosius then grounded to the pitcher to retire the side.
In the bottom of the first, Curtis threw Damon out at home as he tagged up and tried to score on an Offerman fly ball.
In the top of the third, Martinez got a run-scoring single.

Brosius then drew ball four on a full count pitch to bring home a run. Pinch hitter Homer Bush followed with an RBI single. Girardi brought a run in with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the eighth, Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees.
In the top of the ninth, with a runner on second and one out, Jose RF Santiago took the mound for the Royals and prevented the Yankees from adding to their lead.
The Yankees racked up 16 hits in the win.
