Today concludes the series in Pittsburgh between the Pirates and the St Louis Cardinals. The Pirates will try to gain a series split and get back above .500 with a win.

St Louis Browns SP Rube Waddell will miss the next 14 months with a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament.

Boston Doves C Frank Bowerman announced he will retire at the end of the season.

In the top of the first, Konetchy put the Cardinals on the board with a sacrifice fly. Shaw added a two-out RBI single.

In the bottom of the first, Leach scored from first on a Wagner single combined with a Shaw throwing error.

In the bottom of the third, Wagner tied the game with a two-out RBI single. Wagner went on to score from third on a Wilson infield single and the Pirates had taken the lead.

After three: Pittsburgh 3 St Louis 2.

In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals loaded the bases with nobody out. Ellis tied the game when he grounded into the 4-6 fielder's choice.

In the top of the sixth, Bresnahan gave the Cardinals the lead back with an RBI single.

After six: St Louis 4 Pittsburgh 3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wagner delivered the game-tying RBI double.

In the bottom of the eighth, Leach came through with the tie-breaking two-out two-run single. With a runner on first and two out, Sam Melter took the mound for the Cardinals. Wagner followed with a single to become the first player in National League history to have a five-hit game.

In the top of the ninth, with a runner on first and two out, Evans flew to right to end the game.

The two teams combined for 24 hits and seven errors in the contest.

Final score: Pittsburgh 6 St Louis 4.
