In the bottom of the fourth, Miller scored from third when Hulswitt made a bad throw to second after fielding a Gibson grounder and the Pirates were on the board first. The Pirates went on to load the bases with one out. But Ellis threw Wilson out at home after catching a Willis fly ball to turn an unconventional inning-ending double play.  
 
In the top of the sixth, Bresnahan tied the game with an RBI single. Hulswitt brought Bresnahan home with a single to give the Cardinals the lead. Beebe then scored Hulswitt with a two-out single.  
 
After six: St Louis 3 Pittsburgh 1. 
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Wagner hit a lead off triple. It was his 161st career triple, placing him 14th all-time. Miller then singled to score Wagner and make it a one-run game. Miller went on to score on an Abstein sacrifice fly to tie the game.  
 
In the top of the ninth, Evans gave the Cardinals the lead back with an RBI single.  
 
In the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates went down in order.  
 
The Cardinals got 11 hits in the win.
