In the bottom of the third, Spencer led off with a 386 foot homer to cut the Mariners lead in half. Soriano put the Yankees in the lead with a two-out two-run double.

In the top of the sixth, Guillen tied the game with a two-out RBI single. Guillen then scored from first on a McLemore single combined with a Williams throwing error and then Mariners had regained the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jeff Nelson took the mound for the Mariners.
In the bottom of the eighth, Norm Charlton took the mound for the Mariners.
In the top of the ninth, Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kazuhiro Sasaki took the mound for the Mariners. With the winning run at second and two out, Sasaki struck out Soriano to send the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the eleventh, Joel Pineiro took the mound for the Mariners and struck out the side.
In the bottom of the twelfth, Williams ended the game with a 418 foot solo home run.
