The old dos based game I am using makes it very easy to run a quick replay of the Indy 500 so I added the event into the mix. I also dug up an old Nascar version of the game and may add stock car racing to the list of sports but likely not for at least another decade
1937 INDIANAPOLIS 500
WILBUR SHAW CAPTURES CHECKERED FLAG AT INDY
May 31, 1937
Indiana native Wilbur Shaw ran a near flawless race to claim the victory in the 25th running of the Indianapolis 500. Shaw, who also won the event in real life, started second on the grid but took over the lead from pole sitter Bill Cummings on lap six and never relinquished it as he finished two laps ahead of his nearest competitor. For the 35 year old Shaw, who grew up in Shelbyville, it was his first victory in 9 Indy 500 events. His previous best was second place finishes in both 1933 and 1935.
The race had very little drama as there was just one lead change, when Shaw passed Bill Cummings on the backstretch of the 6th lap and was never challenged. Despite being lapped by Shaw on lap 95 and again on lap 109, Cummings would hold on to second place for much of the race until he was passed with less than 30 laps remaining by Louis Meyer. Meyer would finish second and Cummings would have to settle for third place.
Cummings, an Indianapolis native, was the winner of the 1933 Indy 500 and would finish 3rd in real life in 1937. The 1938 event, his 9th Indy, would be his last as the then 34 year old would die in a highway accident in the winter of 1939. New York native Louis Mayer, who finished second in this replay, was 4th in real-life. He had won the 1936 event as well as 1928 and 1933 to become the first 3 time winner of the Indy 500.
