I agree with Steve - there is no such thing as "right" or "wrong", you'll have to find out what suits you best.
As far as simming ahead - there are different opinions: A lot of guys like to sim ahead 30 or more years to create some history and get rid off the original players, I use to start my leagues on Day One and enjoy watching the league unfold and develop.
But that's the beauty of this game - you can do whatever you personally like … and if you haven't played fictional before you most likely will need a few tries to find out what you prefer.
