He may be young compared to many NCAA stars, but at the age of 26, Ty Cobb has already proven himself as an elite performer.

A .429 batting average on the season has put the Cal Poly Mustangs star into rarefied air.

"He's only going to get better, that's the scary thing," the Cal Poly manager told reporters.

It will be hard to improve on a campaign that saw the left fielder stroke 273 hits, with 31 doubles, 3 triples, 87 home runs, 185 RBIs and 175 runs scored.

"I definitely never expected to hit .429 this year, that's for sure," Cobb said.

Mustangs Star Wins Triple Crown:

Cal Poly left fielder Ty Cobb had a season that places him among the greats, winning the 3rd Triple Crown in NCAA history. Clearly one of the best players in the American League this year, he compiled a .429 batting average with 273 hits, 31 doubles, 3 triples, 87 home runs and 185 RBIs.

His skipper said, "I have been around a few years and have never seen anything like the year Ty had this year. It was truly remarkable."
