I can understand your frustration, but these sorts of stories actually happen, so I'd hate to ditch it. The main problem, as I see it, is that baseball drafts kids at 18 and the NFL drafts them at 21. So one possible scenario is for the player to be drafted at 18 and then quit baseball to go into the NFL draft three years later. At least that would give the GM a heads-up about the possibility that the player will quit in three years.
I'm not sure the storyline can be set up that way, so I'd be happy to consider any other suggestions to make this storyline better.
