Gibson followed with a two-run double as the Pirates batted around the order in the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bresnahan put the Cardinals on the board with an RBI double. Smith got an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the ninth, Abstein padded his stats with a two-out RBI single. The Pirates went on to load the bases with two out before Camnitz grounded to second to retire the side.
The Pirates used a 12-hit attack to avoid the series sweep.
