The Draft day floor in Nashville was buzzing as NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman (pictured) announced a blockbuster trade between the Calgary Flames and the Tampa Bay lightning before the Philadelphia Flyers took to the stage to announce their first overall selection.

Calgary sent centre Marc Savard, Defenseman Derek Morris and goaltending prospect Craig Anderson to the Lightning for 23yr old centre Brad Richards.

In Richards, Fyvie hopes he has finally acquired a number one centre that befits his dynamic duo of Martin St.Louis and Jarome Iginla. "Richards is a premiere centre in all three zones. He can run your powerplay, he can shutdown the opposition, he can win battles." Fyvie said of his new prize. "He's won rookie of the year, he's capable of a high workload and he's a leader."

In return, Calgary gives up considerable depth. "Obviously the price is high for a top-line forward. We're giving up two key players and a prospect we feel has a chance to be a starting goaltender in the NHL."

Centre Savard has struggled under Maurice to find his role on the team, as he has been consistently shuffled up and down the lineup. Derek Morris has been with the Flames his entire career but has struggled to live up to the high expectations that come with his draft position. Craig Anderson has only one year of professional hockey under his belt, but has shown early promise, but with 25yr old Giguere already established, Anderson's route to the starting role in Calgary is blocked.

23yr old PEI native Brad Richards comes to Calgary with a lot of promise and is seen as franchise centre that the team has missed since moving Joe Nieuwendyk in the mid-90s. Since breaking into the league in 2000, his point totals have consistently increased along with his ice-time and responsiblilty. Calgary hopes the young forward can compliment Iginla and St.Louis and make the Flames a force to be reckoned with.

Time will tell if this move can take a Flames team over the hump and past the first round.
