In the top of the first, Stairs put the Athletics on the board with a 334 foot two-run jack with two out.

In the bottom of the second, Brosius got an RBI single to put the Yankees on the board. Posada put the Yankees in the lead with a two-run double. Posada went on to score from third when Williams grounded to short. Martinez made it a five-run inning with a two-out RBI single.

After three: New York 5 Oakland 2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Knoblauch hit a solo home run 402 feet. Martinez hit a two-run homer 328 feet with two out.

In the bottom of the fifth, Curtis hit a 421 foot lead off homer. Posada had an RBI double. Jeter got a two-out RBI double. With Jeter at second and two out, Dave Telgheder took the mound for the Athletics and walked two batters to load the bases with two out before striking out O'Neill to end the inning.

After six: New York 11 Oakland 2.

In the top of the seventh, Giambi got a stat-padding two-out RBI single. A walk loaded the bases with two out. Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees and got Grieve to ground to first to retire the side.

In the top of the ninth, Grieve hit a meaningless two-out RBI double.

The two teams combined for 24 hits in the contest.
