The Calgary Flames announced a trade with the Buffalo Sabres this afternoon which will see top 4 defenseman Alexei Zhitnik (pictured) suit up for the Flames down the stretch. In exchange, the Flames have sent prospect centre Steve Begin and a 9th round pick in this coming entry draft.

The 29yr old Alexei Zhitnik is a known commodity who can handle top minutes and adds a puck moving dimension to the Flames' blueline. Zhitnik has an impressive 15 goals and 43 points in 65 games this season for the lowly Sabres and the Flames are hoping he can continue his impressive production on his new team.

"We're locked in a playoff race at the moment and are looking to add some value to our backend. Zhitnik will really help us on our powerplay." Fyvie said.

Zhitnik looks to be placed on one of the top two pairs on the blueline and give Boyle some support on the powerplay.

"We have a lot of good young defenders on this club that would enjoy some veteran presence. He's going to be a great fit." Said coach Maurice of the new blueliner.

Zhitnik's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but Flames GM stressed he intends to hang on to this recent acquisition.

"We have quite a bit of room on the blueline this July so we're hoping to retain Alexei. This was a great opportunity to add to our depth now and into the future." Said Fyvie.

Returning to Buffalo is 23r old Steve Begin who has spend that last several seasons in the AHL. Begin was drafted 40th overall in 1996 and has been surpassed on the depth chart by several recent prospects. Buffalo give the young centre an new opportunity with a rebuilding club looking to get younger.

Calgary is tied for 5th with the rival Edmonton Oilers in the conference with 73 points in 68 games. Their next game is in Columbus against the Blue Jackets as they continue their epic 9 game road trip. The Flames don't return home until March 21st when they host the San Jose Sharks.
