Flames make minor move with Sharks

Tkaczuk swapped for Sutherby

The Calgary Flames made a minor league move shipping 22yr old prospect Daniel Tkaczuk for 19yr old Brian Sutherby of the San Jose Sharks today.

Tkaczuk was drafted 6th overall by the previous regime in Calgary in the 1997 NHL entry draft. He has spent the previous two seasons playing in the AHL and posted 29 goals and 81 points in 130 games played.

Edmonton native, Brian Sutherby spent his first season in the AHL posting 10 goals and 34 points and a whopping 129PIM in 70 games. He was drafted in the 4th round of the 2000 entry draft from the Moose Jaw Warriors.

GM Fyvie was happy to give Tkaczuk a chance to play in a new environment. "Daniel has shown a lot of promise but it's time we gave him his chance on another club. As a centre, there just isn't a lot of opportunities with us. We're pretty deep down the middle right now."

Coming from San Jose, Sutherby has a lot of size, versatility and youth on his side. "Brian is a big player that has a lot of upside for us. He goes to the net, uses his size and can play on the wing and down the middle. He's still a few years away so he has time to really cement his position on the depth chart."
