If you put a player on waivers and no one claims him then you can put him back on your roster or release him. If you release him you still owe his salary.

If no one will claim him on waivers then to get rid of him and the salary you're going to have arrange a package deal trade where you include an under paid player.

If someone is out of option years that means he can't be sent to the minors.
