In the top of the first, O'Neill put the Yankees on the board with a two-out RBI double.
In the top of the second, Prieto walked three straight batters to load the bases with one out. But Jeter grounded into the 6-4-3 to retire the side.
In the bottom of the second, Tejada's first hit of the season was a 434 foot two-run homer with two out and the Athletics took the lead.
In the top of the third, Knoblauch tied the game with a two-out RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hinch put the Athletics back in the lead with a two-out solo shot that traveled 346 feet.
In the top of the sixth, Aaron Small took the mound for the Athletics.

In the bottom of the eighth, Mike Stanton took the mound for the Yankees.
In the top of the ninth, Billy Taylor took the mound for the Athletics. O'Neill tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the ninth, Tejada hit a two-out single and Stanton injured his shoulder on the play and had to leave the game. With a runner on first and two out, Jeff Nelson took the mound for the Yankees and got Hinch to ground to short to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Curtis put the Yankees in the lead with a two-out RBI double. Henderson would throw Curtis out at home as he tried to score from second on a Jeter single.
In the bottom of the tenth, Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees. The Athletics loaded the bases with one out. Grieve grounded into the 4-2 fielder's choice for the second out. Spiezio then flew to center to end the game.
The Yankees got 13 hits in the win.
