In the top of the fourth, with runners at the corners and one out, the Athletics put on the squeeze but Hale failed to make contact with the ball and Simmons was tagged out at home.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Dugan lined to second for the second out. Collins, however, delivered with a two-run single to break the scoreless tie.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Yankees increased their lead when Lazzeri hit a two-run triple with two out.

After six: New York 4 Philadelphia 0.

In the top of the eighth, down by four, the Athletics loaded the bases with nobody out. Bishop brought a run in with an infield single. Pinch hitter Eddie Collins Sr grounded into the 5-2 fielder's choice for the first out. Simmons brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Cobb followed with a two-out RBI single to make it a one-run game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rube Walberg took the mound for the Athletics.

In the top of the ninth, with the tying run at first and two out, pinch hitter Bill Lamar grounded to short to end the game.

The Athletics recorded 10 hits in the loss.

Final score: New York 4 Philadelphia 3.
