In the bottom of the first, Martinez belted a two-run homer 348 feet to put the Mariners on the board.

In the top of the second, a two-out RBI single by Jeremy Giambi put the Athletics on the board. An error by Guillen followed to load the bases with two out. But Damon flew to right to retire the side.

In the bottom of the second, Guillen was thrown out at home trying to score from first on a Wilson two-out double.

In the top of the third, Bell lost the handle on a Tejeda grounder, allowing Jason Giambi to score from third and tie the game. Hernandez went on to give the Athletics the lead with a two-out RBI single.

In the top of the seventh, Chavez delivered a two-run shot 436 feet with two out. Tejeda then sent one 414 feet to make it back-to-back home runs. With a runner on first and two out, Norm Charlton took the mound for the Mariners.

In the top of the ninth, Kazuhiro Sasaki took the mound for the Mariners.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jason Isringhausen took the mound for the Athletics.

The Mariners committed three errors in the loss.
