Forward Mike Cammalleri (pictured) of the University of Michigan Wolverines, was drafted 14th overall by the host Calgary Flames today in the 2000 NHL entry draft. The expansion team Columbus Blue Jackets selected Calgary raised Dany Heatley first overall, whilst their fellow expansion team Minnesota Wild picked Russian winger Sergei Mozyakin. The first goalie selected was Swede Henrik Lunqvist, who went 3rd overall to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Listed at 5'9" and 190lb, Cammalleri is under-sized by some standards, but Flames GM Fyvie was impressed by his tools and ability. "He can skate, score, and win battles along the boards. He interviewed really well with us too. I was happy that he was still available at 14." Asked where he saw Cammalleri playing, Fyvie highlighted the player's versatility and ability to play all three forward positions.

This past season, Cammalleri posted 13 goals and 26 points in 39 games for the Wolverines.

Players still left available when Calgary took the podium were Slovak winger Marian Gaborik, centre Antoine Vermette, and Alberta born Scott Hartnell.
