It has been my experience that hitter stats will be much closer to real life than pitcher stats in historical simulations. Wins are partially luck and partially the quality of the team the pitcher plays for. ERA is partly the timing of the hits allowed and partly the quality of the defense behind the pitcher. Take those things away, and the results can diverge dramatically. Hitters carry their circumstances with them more than pitchers do.
