Likewise, the Doug Smith photo posted above does not appear to be in a Red Sox uniform either. The same photo was published in the Boston Globe on July 9, 1912, and is attached below. The caption is difficult to read, but the first four words are "Young Turner Falls Pitcher". My assumption is that he's wearing a Turner Falls (Mass.) uniform. Turner Falls is a town located in Western Massachusetts, due north of Springfield, about ten miles south of the Vermont border.
If you look closely at the photo posted by rrb77, it's obvious that there are no buttons on the jersey worn by Smith. The Red Sox jersey had buttons. In the attached photo, the sock pattern doesn't match the pattern worn by the 1912 Red Sox.
Smith made his debut with the Red Sox the next day after this photo was published in the Boston Globe.
