the competition is high enough that the players know they have to concentrate on every play or someone with similar skill will surpass them. effort is a major portion of the pie for all fringe players and probably the bottom 2/3rds of players.
mental lapses happen, but you better be a really good player if you make a habit of it.

I think I appreciate the snark here, but LI only refers to the leverage of the situation, it has nothing to do with performance in that situation.
