Don Hasenmayer, Only Phillies Player Active in Major leagues before end of WWII Passes Away
Don Hasenmayer, a third baseman and utility infielder, who played for the Phillies in 1945 and 1946, his only major league years, passed away early in February. He was 92. Hasenmayer was the last living Phillies player who played for the Phillies before the end of World War Two. He debuted in the major leagues on May 2, 1945, six days before the War in Europe ended and four months before the war in the Pacific drew to a close. In between his time in the big leagues in May of 1945 and September of 1946, Hasenmayer served in the military and spent a brief time in the minor leagues after his military discharge, before being recalled to the major leagues by the Phillies as the 1946 season wound down. Hasenmayer remained in organized ball, playing in the in the minor leagues until the early 1950s, but he never got a chance AT A THIRD SEASON in the big leagues. In his two stints with he Phillies he totaled just 30 major league at-bats. HE WAS A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF Suburban Philadelphia. He was two months short of his 93rd birthday at the time of his passing.
