Some House rules I use

So I would assume most of us are smarter that the games AI. Even though i'm not great at this game, even I can build good teams year after year. Well at the very least i'm good enough that i'll never have a team finish dead last unless I want them to. So here are some rules that I currently use or will be using soon. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts

1. (Stay within budget. And try to finish season in the green.) Not always possible but as long as you're not overspending and keeping an eye on your finances you should be fine.

2. (Team Budget is set to league average) It's nice to have some money to spend but that the same time teams with huge budgets are too easy to manage.

3. (No sign and trades. Must wait until the next off season to trade newly acquired player.) Too easy to sign free agents that in the off season that you can't even afford and trade them for picks and prospects.

4. (Must play with full 5 SP rotation during the year) I used to often play with 4 SP's through out the season

5. (Must wait 1 full calendar year to reacquire player that team traded away)

6. (No front or back loading of contracts. 25% rule.) Every year of contract has to be withing 25% of highest paid year. Rule only applies to players making 5 million or more per year.

7. (Relief pitcher contracts need to be offered to players by Dec 31st and can be offered again starting on May 1st. In case of emergencies, team can offer RP contracts at 2x the players asking price at any time between those two dates) I put this rule in because in my fictional league i was tired of seeing too many good RP's in free agency to start the season. A smart GM would just wait and build their bullpen then. With this rule it forces you to act quicker and pay more in line of market value for those players.

8 (Trading players 33 years of age and older.
Team will retain 50% of remaining contract in any trade.)
(Only applies to players making 10 million per year or more) This penalizes GMs that try to offload their aging vets to get younger and shed salary. So basically if you've got a player that just hit his 30's and is on a long contract you better figure out fast if you think he's going to regress sooner rather than later and if so trade him before that 33 age deadline.

9. (Contacts with team options) If team option is not picked up player will receive 25% of that years salary. I used to just do 10% but I feel like it's so much easier to get players to sign if i gave them a high salary team option year, even when i was likely not to even honor it. Now if I pass it's going to cost me a nice chunk of a players salary.
