I think that is an excellent way to start.
I have done something somewhat similar in the past. Started regular historical in 1895, played to spring of 1901, erased history, etc. set up for random 1901-2000 and off I went. It worked pretty well but it was a little weird seeing Buck Freeman and a couple others hitting 40+ homeruns.
Starting off like you did in 1936 might be a little bit better.
One big advantage is you do not have HOF players starting in your game in their 40s.
Let us know how you like that set up after a couple years.
The only problem with 1936 is that Rogers Hornsby and Frankie Frisch are pretty old.
