I hear this. But mostly the reason that Vargas is expendable is that Joe Willemse provides pretty much the same value as a utility infielder. Maybe not quite as excellent defensively as Vargas, or with as much power in his bat, but a better contact hitter and with even better intangibles. From the moment I drafted him I thought of Willemse as the future Vargas and I think that time has come.
Plus, if there is one thing our farm system is good at it is producing versatile infield defensive backups (B.J. Drew, Emile Brunelleschi, Kevin Flieder, to name a few who could be WPK-ready in utility roles now or very soon.)
Of course, if another player like this falls into our lap before the trading deadline, I won't say no.
