Walkers news: St. Louis makes deal before opener

Although some of the team's in the Midwest Baseball League had already opened their season, the St. Louis River Walkers were among those who waited a day and they took advantage by making one last deal in hopes of bolstering their roster.
St. Louis sent right-handed pitcher Brandon "Spags" Spagnuolo along with left-hander Ernesto Rios to the Evansville Big Bossemen in exchange for corner outfielder Carlos Vidal.
Spagnuolo, 29, was part of a numbers crunch, out of options and unlikely to pass through waivers.
He had his best season for St. Louis in 2023 when has a part of the starting rotation he pitched in 29 games going 9-10 with a 3.96 ERA.
Spagnuolo was injured to start the 2024 season and never found any traction pitching all but the final month of the season at AAA Memphis.
Rios, 25, was part of a highly-touted trade with Milwaukee in 2023.
He made three late-season starts with the Walkers in both 2023 and 2024, going 2-0 with a 3.19 ERA but when it came down to battle it out for a spot in the rotation for 2025, he was outshined by others after going 1-3 with a 7.13 ERA.
In the 29-year-old Vidal, St. Louis gets a corner outfielder who seems to have some talent but has been blocked during his time in Evansville.
In 2024, Vidal hit .268 in 64 games in the majors (34 starts) with seven homers and 20 RBIs.
