P420: Penultimate Roundup

P420 is a study in contrasts. In the AC, the division-leading Huntley Red Raiders, Amsterdam Armada, and Blue Farm Bombers have pulled away from the field, with the smallest division lead the 14.5 games between the Bombers and the Ohio Silver Wolves. The Wild Card spots are still highly contested, however, with the Toronto Charmanders currently in the top spot and the aforementioned Wolves and the LSU Tigers tied for the second spot. Huntley's lead for the #1 AC seed is at 8 games, so theoretically it should be safe, but one never knows...

Over in the NC, every single race is tight; the biggest division lead is 4.5 games, and ironically enough, it's in the division that houses the best 3 teams in the conference, the NC West. All 3 of those teams--RKO PackAndPlay, Miami Jeters, and New Orleans Yankees--will easily make the playoffs, with the only drama left being which team will be the #1 seed and which teams will face off in the Wild Card game. The NC East and Central division winners will be the only teams from those divisions to make the playoffs, so a lot is on the line in the final month of the season.

Huntley's month was also a study in contrasts. The Red Raiders came out of the All-Star Break red-hot, winning 13 games in a row. Over its next 11 games, however, the team stumbled to a 4-7 record. But Huntley ended the day on an 11-game winning streak. Here's hoping we don't peak too soon...

Offensively, the team is having a very balanced year, with Mantle, Vaughan, Brett, and Appling accumulating 4.0 or more WAR to this point and Bonds, Cash, and Griffey Jr between 3.0 and 3.3 WAR. On the pitching side, every starter has accumulated at least 5.0 WAR though August, lead by Curt Schilling's 6.2, although it's Ed Walsh's 1.97 ERA that catches the eye. The bullpen has been solid, with Dennis Eckersley the standout with a 1.17 ERA in a setup role. Potential playoff red flag: despite succeeding in 38 of 41 save situations, Eric Gagne's ERA is the bullpen's highest at 3.94, and that's actually better than his FIP (4.48); all that leads to Gagne accumulating exactly 0.0 WAR through August.
