The Other Pirates Dynasty 2004
Pirates Offseason
First off, we go with the coaches signing period. The Pirates lost pitching coach Spin Williams and A Manager Dave Clark. The Pirates signed Rick Anderson, rated outstanding, as their new pitching coach for $889k for four years, and Tom Lawless, rated outstanding in hitting and good at pitching, for $925k for three years.
The Pirates lost INF Abraham Nunez, SP Jeff Suppan, MR Dennys Reyes, RF Matt Stairs, SP Jeff D'Amico, MR Mike Holtz, 3B Robin Ventura, and 2B Pat Meares to free agency. Here's a quick preview as to how the Pirates are going to look heading into next season before free agency. The Pirates also made a few roster moves this offseason. They released relievers Mike Lincoln and Duaner Sanchez as they had run out of option years. They also moved JJ Davis, Ryan Vogelsong, and Dave Williams to the 25-man roster, as they are also out of options. The Pirates then added MR Ben Shaffar, SP Justin Reid, RF BJ Barns, and RF Jorge Cortez to the 40-man roster, as their fifth year of playing pro baseball had ended.
The starting rotation lost Suppan and D'Amico. Dave Williams will replace D'Amico as the #5 starter this season, and they hope to be able to go out and pick up a big name starting pitcher to be the ace of the staff, moving the rest of the starters down a notch in the rotation. The Pirates will return the majority of their bullpen, with the only change being Vogelsong replacing Reyes as the mop-up reliever. The catching position will remain the same with House and Cota splitting time, but they need to be careful as Doumit, a 3.5 star prospect, is just waiting for a chance in AAA. First base will return with Craig Wilson getting the majority of the starts. Second base will see Bobby Hill returning as the starter. Mackowiak will return to third base this season, though he has to watch his back as Henson, a five star prospect, is waiting in AAA for a chance to start. Jose Castillo and Marshall McDougall will battle things out in spring training for a chance at the starting shortstop position. Leftfield will see Xavier Nady returning, and the Pirates hope to get more pop out of his bat this season. Team MVP Mark Kotsay will return to start in CF. In rightfield, JJ Davis will get his final chance to prove that he belongs on a major league roster, as he is out of option years. The bench will include 1B Carlos Rivera, 2B/SS Jack Wilson, OF Tony Alvarez, and a player to backup Mackowiak at third base that the Pirates plan on signing in free agency.

The A's picked up 2.5 star LF Jacque Jones, paying a big price giving up 4 star SP Tim Hudson to the Twins. Ouch!!! Who thinks Beane would've really made this move?
The Mariners got 2.5 star 3B Tyler Houston from the Phillies for 4 star reliever Ryan Franklin and 2.5 star prospect 1B Jon Nelson.
Lastly, the Angels got 2.5 star prospect C Josh Bard from the Indians in exchange for 4 star reliever Valerio DeLosSantos and 4 star prospect LF Caleb Maher. Ouch!!!!!
