Two months after hitting for the cycle, Dennys Hernandez was drafted first out of UC Santa Barbara. He is a reliable shortstop and is well-balanced offensively and on the basepaths.


The first high schooler drafted was also the first pitcher taken in 1985. Johnny Gibbons went third overall to the Tigers out of Marist High School in Georgia. He was a finalist for the Everett Williams pitching award three of four years in high school, winning once. He also won the Kerry Law MVP his freshman year.
