July 23rd 2019

July 23rd saw an interesting pitching matchup. Rookie Bill Guenther (2-0, 4.80 ERA), who had been pitching well out of the bullpen, was given his first start in the Summer Series. His opposing pitcher was Greg Vallee (3-0, 1.71 ERA), who was putting together a Pitcher of the Series calibre season.

Guenther and Vallee traded scoreless frames for five and a half innings until East Driftwood’s weakness in the middle infield let down Guenther. Sitting on one out with a runner at third, Guenther gave up a single to Austin Schlegl. The ball fell to Josh Harris, who was able to get to the first out at second. However, Tyler Rogers was slow with the throw to first and that gave West Driftwood the lead. The lead carried into the top of the ninth as Chris Wilson took over from Vallee. However, he gave up a walk and two singles to allow East Driftwood to tie up the game. Ben Castle was brought in for the bottom of the ninth, which was an odd choice given that Castle has had an abysmal season. He gave up a single before earning a fielder’s choice and flyout to put him at two outs. This was followed by a single to put runners at first and second before a deep single to right-center from Matt St. Sauver allowed Joe Chavez to score from second for the win.

W: C. Wilson (2-1) L: B. Castle (0-4)
