I have found that the best way to do a historical replay is to simply start a new game for each season you want to play...play until the Stanley Cup. Then start a new game for the next season....the only bad thing about this method is the need to use third party software to track yearly stats, but you get relatively accurate results and don't have to worry about players falling through the cracks and accumulating stats with teams they didn't actually play for IRL. I will confess I haven't played any seasons during the WWII years, so I'm not sure if the players who left teams to join the military are actually on rosters using this method or not.
