Choosing fewer playable leagues during setup will help a bit, but in general the standard game is going to be a lot slower than historical or custom games because there are many, many more teams and leagues active. It's also a good idea to make sure that your antivirus isn't doing anything that'll make the game slower, like monitoring every change it makes to the save files, since that happens very frequently.
