Hey, Stanley, all of what you bring up is stuff I have been troubled with also. Here is what I have noticed:
1. Having the AI set lineups and depth charts is an exercise in futility. For the most part, it ignores platoon possibilities and just plays your "best" player at a position against both lefties and righties. Furthermore, you can "force" a player to be put in the lineup through player lineups, but not selectively versus lefties and righties.
2. Also, as you mention, the lineup orders are atrocious that the AI sets ---- it seems that it always wants to put your fastest guy at the top of the lineup, regardless of how good a hitter he is. I use my spreadsheet to help put in the orders.
3. He also never sets up players that are starting at one position as a substitute for another position. For example, suppose your 2b is a shortstop that has been trained at 2b (hmmm, whaddaya know, that's my situation!). You then want your 2b to backup your SS, but the game won't ever do that automatically. You have to do it manually.
4. Finally, I always set my players to substitute for another player ONLY when he is tired, except for one situation: where I am not platooning for a position but the main player is a lefty and my backup is a righty. That is my situation currently with Smoky Burgess (86, but really should be a diamond) at C and 69 Boone backing him up. I have Boone (with his 80 def versus Burgess' 47) set as defensive backup for Burgess against both lefties and righties --- however, I also have Boone starting every 2nd game vs. lefties. What I DON'T know, as I am new to OOTP this season, is whether that means every other game against lefties or every other game regardless of who is pitching.
Finally, even though most of my players are SLOOOOOW on the base paths and I have Steve Sax (mr. speedy) as pinch runner, and have set my global strategy for late innings to the highest possible rating, I have never seen the AI actually substitute him as a pinch runner.
So if anybody knows how to actually get someone pitch run for (or what every other game actually means by every 2nd game, whether it is all games, or just those against that pitcher type), I would appreciate your guidance!
