Unless he's a Babe Ruth or at least a Don Newcombe, a pitcher's hitting skill doesn't add enough to a team to be worth very much. A regular starter will get perhaps 20 plate appearances a month. If he's a .250 hitter, he'll get five hits. If he's a .100 hitter, he'll get two. How much would you pay for three hits a month?
