More on opening Day 1946
Beginning of MLB's Post World War Two Years ears (4/16/1946) Continued.
Hall Of Fame Slugger, Ralph Kiner (Pittsburgh) made his MLB debut today, as did the man whose home run in the 1950 season finale, sent the Philadelphia Phillies (Whiz kids) to the 1950 World Series as they narrowly edged the Brooklyn dogers for the Nl Pennant. sisler debuted as a St. louis Cardinal. The Cardinals would defeat the Boston Red Sox in a 7 game World Series. Ted Williams would be the MVP of the all-star game and the Retroactive Rookies of the Year would be American League: Hoot Evers (Detroit Tigers- .266 b. avg) and National League: Del Ennis (Philadelphia Phillies) with the Phillies' Ennis also taking The Sporting News' Rookie Of The Year honors (TSN made only one selection for both leagues). Ennis wasn't on the roster on Opening Day, but made his MLB debut soon after that on April 28. He batted .313, with 17 home runs and 73 RBI to defeat runner-up, Ralph Kiner (23 HR, 81 RBI, .247 b. avg.) for The Sporting News' ROY honors. Ennis was the only rookie from either league who was chosen to play in the mid-season classic, all-star game.
