I've been running a Deadball era starting in 1901 Historical lg. Stock parks, stock options and have be getting a lot of ITPH's up through 1905 which is as far as I've gotten in this league. I get at least one for/against my Phillies, sometimes more per game.
I am also playing a Power Years era starting in 2000 Historical Lg played up to 2006, again everything stock and have seen homers but haven't seen any ITP's as yet. Granted I have not checked every log for this league, neither have I for my 1901 lg as I have seen them happen while playing.
I am in no way a baseball historian it's my (limited) understanding that the parks during these early years were not necessarily fenced in the outfield. So when a batter connected the ball would continue to roll until the OF player caught up with it. While we have closed parks in the game for aesthetic purposes, could the historical stats be reflecting the old time open outfield parks?
Looking at
Baseball Almanac their stats seem to support this. They show the last one was hit by Gagne on 04OCT1982 when he appears to have hit two of them! However, there are several youtube vids showing several that are more recent so maybe it is more common then thought.
