Walkers news: Sept. 25 -- Springfield 5, St. Louis 2
Record: 87-67, 3rd, 5.5 GB Des Moines
Trailing 1-0, Springfield scored three times in the bottom of the second inning and went on for a 5-2 win over St. Louis at Olympic Stadium (Montreal).
A solo homer from Nicky Delmonico off Springfield starting pitcher Justin Verlander in the top of the second inning gave the River Walkers a 1-0 lead.
It didn't last long.
Travis Shaw opened the bottom of the inning with a single off St. Louis starter Trevor Bauer.
Two batters later, the Prairie Fighters had the lead when Dylan Couzens drove a Bauer pitch 422-feet over the wall in left-center field.
Springfield was not done.
Tomas Telis followed with a single. A wild pitch moved him to second.
A Verlander sacrifice bunt planted him at third.
And a passed ball charged to catcher Manny Pina put the Fighters ahead 3-1.
Mookie Betts made that lead 5-1 with a two-run homer off Bauer in the fifth inning.
Verlander pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Four relievers -- Eduardo Pardes, Chris Rearick, Arturo Castro, and Gerson Moreno -- all pitched an inning apiece to close out the win.
Moreno earned his 15th save of the season.
