Topps Giants - 1964
These Oversized cards came out in August 1964 and they quickly became popular with collectors and they soon were referred to by collectors as Topps Giants. That's not what Topps was referring to them as, but the fans actually came up with a better and catchier name for the set. Some of the information on the back of the cards was right up to the minute:ie; The back of Phillie, Johnny Callison's card refers to him as the hero of the 1964 all-star game. (Callison hit a 3-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at the NY Mets' new home, Shea Stadium to give the National League the victory. This game was played only about four weeks before these cards hit the shelves of neighborhood candy stores. That was some Fast Work by the folks at Topps.
Topps is now celebrating the 55th anniversary of the '64 Giants set's release.
