If your not going to invest any cash, then yes - you will have to wait until you can accumulate points, and then spend it wisely in the AH - replacing your worst players first.

When I started, I spent $20 up front to get 25,000 points - made up a chart of my weakest players, and found replacements in the AH. I eventually put about $65 into the team over 6 weeks.

I just took a look at the AH - many players there that would be upgrades for you, and 1100 points would get as many as 3 of them.
