Walkers news: July 28 -- Chicago 9, St. Louis 6
Record: 44-31, 2nd, 3 GB Des Moines
Chicago made it a rough day for St. Louis starting pitcher Trevor Bauer, scoring seven runs off him in five innings, which helped the G-Men post a 9-6 win at Wrigley Field (1979).
With the victory, Chicago, despite being outscored 29-7, came out of the four-game series with a split.
Tied at 3, Chicago took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, when Joc Pederson led off the inning with a solo homer off Bauer.
Two batters later, Jabari Blash put a ball over the wall, making it 5-3 and Chicago was ahead for good.
Chris Owings ended Bauer's outing in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run, two-out double, putting Chicago in front 7-3.
The River Walkers would pull to withing 7-5, but Pederson hit his second long ball of the game, this one off Bobby Poyner, to push the advantage to 8-5.
Asdrubal Cabrera victimized Poyner for a solo shot in the eighth, upping it to 9-5.
The G-Men got a decent outing from starting pitcher Sonny Gray, who gave up three runs in five innings in a weekend where both teams gave up plenty of runs.
Joe Kelly did some heavy duty to close out the win, pitching 3.1 innings during which he allowed one run on three hits.
