Walkers news: Deal with Fort Wayne adds Carlos Martinez to staff
With the National League looking more competitive than it did a year ago, the St. Louis River Walkers took a chance on bolstering their rotation by trading making a trade with Fort Wayne, which would send right-handed pitcher Zach Godley to the Mad Men in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher.
While Godley has been a decent No. 5 starter for the Walkers the past two seasons -- he's 5-5 with a 5.24 ERA this season, after going 8-10 with a 4.75 ERA in 2018 -- there are concerns on if Jacob de Grom, whose has seen a major falloff from his Cy Young winning 2018 campaigns, can hold up in the postseason.
de Grom is 9-8 with a 4.66 ERA this season, after going 14-5 with a 3.07 in 2018.
But that's why I have tried to keep the payroll down by drafting young players when the league formed.
Martinez adds another top three starter to the rotation. He's 5-7 this season with a 3.62 ERA. He'll be a little bit a hit to the payroll -- making $13.5 per season -- but he'll be a free agent after the season.
So we don't have to bring him back. A lot will hinge on how de Grom pitches down the stretch.
