These are usually guys who are in the minors, but who are on your 40-man roster. Putting them on the DL shouldn't burn an option, as the option would've already been triggered when you sent them down to the minors (usually at the end of spring training). The only way putting them on the DL would trigger the option is if you had an open 40-man spot during the season and added that player without promoting him to the big leagues, in which case you didn't need to do that as there's no reason to add a guy to the 40-man during the season unless you're calling him up.
