In OOTP 20, when they introduce tournies, a Tournament of Champions seems like an obvious option. Rewards like that make more sense then extra points and exclusive cards.

I think its actually the opposite. You said it yourself, the current model basically ONLY rewards doing well and having your players perform at high levels without any creativity in the reward system. This is a recipe for the rich getting richer.
If there was more diversity in the reward system and the achivements then people that were playing more thematically or with less stellar players could benefit from cool rewards as well.
For instance and just off the top of my head there could be special cards/packs/points rewarded for:
- Hitting a HR off a perfect pitcher with a bronze player
- Duplicating historical achievements with specific players cards that did them
- Beating a team with a much higher average card rating
- Winning a game with one of every card type
- Hitting a home run off a pitcher who was dead before the player was born
I´m sure the devs/community could come up with way more and way betters ones. Again, that was just a quick off the cuff example of what I mean. I think achievements like these would do the exact opposite of make the rich richer but would rather reward people for things other than just winning and beating the crap out of people.
