i let the rng determine who i sign longer-term... and if not enough of the cheaper deals possible during arb years, then i'll spend more in FA as needed.

spend what you can without causing problems. if you run into financial issues often, or at all, then you should probably change something.

if you never run into problems and never near your limits of payroll, then you should also change what you do.

whatever you do, don't act as you see in the MLB. they are poor financial managers. this is a product of how they are hired/fired. if you know you only have 3-5 years, you will roll the dice a bit more on potentially horrible contracts. if you will be fired before paying for your financial transgressions, why worry about it?

you should never paint yourself into a corner. a forced decision is a culmination of numerous mistakes from potentially 5-10 years ago. use the salaries page under Front Office. consider what you will do and adjust any numbers you see on that page for the coming years. you can easily see who needs to be replaced before end of contract etc too.

i have the most financial flexibility year-to-year when i am consistently changing a handful of players each year on my team. when you have to change out 5 batters (not in the last 2-3 spots) or 3+ SP, it's really difficult to replace so many important pieces in one year. spreading it out gives more options. more options equals better choices on average over time.
