One more year...

In the first post I alluded to Kingman's IRL last season of 1986 being a fluke. At the time, no player had ever "retired" with that many homers in his last season. Although suspected at the time, it eventually came out that the owners colluded against the free agents that year, meaning Kong and his 33 HR/100 RBI average over the 1984-1986 seasons should have found him a spot in 1987 under normal circumstances. Seattle was rumored to have been interested back then.

Big Dave has said in the past that he intended to play at least another year or two, and thought he could reach 500 IRL homers. He did play in the Senior Baseball League in 1987, and had a stint in Triple as well before finally retiring.

Also given that fact that the mid-late 80's started the halcyon days of the low average sluggers (Deer, Incaviglia, Kittle, Phelps, Balboni, plus Gorman Thomas, Baylor and Armas finishing up) no doubt someone would have made a spot for my favorite DH.

So just for kicks, I'm going to play another season and see what happens. I'll add him to the Mariner's roster, as was runored, essentially replacing Gorman Thomas in the DH role. Maybe Kong has another solid year, or maybe he fizzles out with a sub-Mendoza average and loses his power.
