08/19/1986 - Orioles Come Back Late to Clip Athletics
Baltimore and Oakland put this game in the books despite some rain.
The Baltimore Orioles beat the Oakland Athletics, 7-6 at Memorial Stadium, in part due to right fielder Ken Gerhart, who nabbed player of the game honors. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winner was Baltimore reliever Nate Snell, now 7-0. The loser was Bill Krueger. Rich Bordi was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 22 of 29 save opportunities.
Gerhart had a game-changing double in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-1 fastball from Steve Ontiveros, he banged a run-scoring double to right-center, giving the Orioles a 7-6 lead. It was the 12th double of the year for Gerhart.
"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Gerhart said.
