San Francisco left-hander Atlee Hammaker made an effective start against the New York Mets at Candlestick Park, leading his team to a 6-3 win. Picking up the save was Gary Lavelle, his 12th. With the win, the Giants have a record of 26-22.
The Giants got a big at-bat from second baseman Joel Youngblood. For the game, Youngblood went 3-4 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the first, with the bases loaded, he stroked a 2-run single. His 47th hit of the season gave San Francisco a 2-0 lead.
Youngblood called the triumph "a good team win."
