06/09/1981 - Reds Lose to Mets in Walk Off
People near Shea Stadium no doubt heard the roar of the crowd as the winning run crossed the plate.
New York Mets starter Pat Zachry turned in a sterling performance against the Cincinnati Reds, leading his team to a slim 3-2 win. Reliever Terry Leach picked up the win. His record improves to 3-4. Doug Bair took the loss.
The Mets got a big at-bat from second baseman Wally Backman. For the game, Backman was 1-1 with a double and a walk. In the bottom of the 11th, with a runner on 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring double. His 7th double of the season gave New York a 3-2 lead.
"It's a satisfying feeling, to win like we did," said Backman.
New York is 24-28 and Cincinnati, with the loss, 29-26.
