05/31/1981 - Cubs Nip Mets, 5-4, Despite Kong's 2 Homers

New York got a terrific performance from first baseman Dave Kingman, but it wasn't enough to beat the Chicago Cubs. Chicago won the Shea Stadium contest, 5-4. Kingman was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Ken Kravec earned the win to go to 2-3. He allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. The Cubs bumped their record to 27-18 with this latest triumph.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the seventh, with the game tied, Ken Reitz was at the plate when Chicago scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Cubs to go in front, 5-4.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Reitz.
