I put in $5 during beta but I also bought the game heavily discounted during a steam sale so I figured I could throw a little more the Devs way.

I still believe we need to be patient, that promotion and relegation will make that occurrence (getting blown out by whales) less and less likely. The problem is that in the 5 weeks or so for teams to settle into the league that is best fit for them that many will simply give up. That is a long time to wait to feel like you are finally in a competitive league.
It looks like my main team is under performing so badly that we will stay in the Gold league next week. All, or almost all whale teams will be promoted to diamond so Gold should be a little more competitive next week.
There will occasionally be whale teams who join late and blast their way through the lower leagues but there are currently 195 leagues so the chances of them being in our specific league is not that high, certainly not high enough that I think we will see them on a regular basis.
